Board of Elections Certifies Independent Maps Petition Signatures

CHICAGO, IL – The Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE) today unanimously voted to validate the petition signatures of the Independent Map Amendment. On May 23rd, 2016, ISBE staff completed a 5% random sample of signatures and projected that nearly 73% of the 563,974 signatures submitted were valid. The sampling indicated a minimum number of 375,613 and maximum number of 395,021 valid signatures were submitted to the state – well in excess of the 290,216 valid signatures required by law to place the amendment on the ballot.

“Our constitution gives people the power to address flaws in the legislature that the politicians refuse to fix themselves,” said Dave Mellet, Independent Maps campaign manager. “The people have spoken, and they are ready to vote on a fair and transparent system for drawing political maps in Illinois.”
